Department of Pediatrics via kwout

The USF Health Service Corp is sponsoring the “Reach out and Read”  book drive.  A donation box for new and “gently used” children’s books, and an annotated list of books for children is located at the entrance to the library. In Pediatric clinic waiting rooms, community volunteers – many of whom are USF students – engage the children with books and reading, looking and labeling, reading aloud, listening to the children read, and modeling book-related interactions for parents. The books you donate are available in the waiting and examining room for children to peruse while waiting to see the doctor.  Later on, in the examining room, the pediatric care provider introduces an age-appropriate children's book into the visit, commenting on the child's response and offering information on the child's development. At each well-child checkup, the child is given a new book to take home. These books have been carefully chosen and are developmentally and culturally appropriate for the child.  For more information on the USF Health initiative please visit.  http://health.usf.edu/medicine/pediatrics/reach-out-read.htm   As librarians, we all know how important books are, so let’s not just fill up one box for this worthy effort, let’s see if we can have the table overflowing with books!! Thank you

Frankenstein 2

During October and early November, Shimberg Library hosted the display Frankenstein: Penetrating the Secrets of Nature. The exhibit examined how playwrights and filmmakers transformed the Frankenstein story into one of the Western world's most enduring myths. It considered how Mary Shelley's unfortunate creature frequently provides a framework for discussions of contemporary biomedical advances such as cloning, which challenge our traditional understanding of what it means to be human.  Developed by the National Library of Medicine in collaboration with the American Library Association, this display was well-attended by the USF community. Pictured above Rick Haley, Systems, enjoys the Frankenstein  exhibition.

Limb
Shimberg Health Sciences Library is proud to host the National Library of Medicine display, "Life and Limb, the Toll of the American Civil War" from 3/21 to 4/30/2011. The perspectives of surgeons, physicians, and nurses are richly documented in the history of Civil War medicine, which highlights the heroism and brutality of battlefield operations and the challenges of caring for the wounded during wartime. Yet the experiences of injured soldiers during the conflict and in the years afterwards are less well-known. Life and Limb: The Toll of the American Civil War explores the experiences of disabled Civil War veterans and their role as symbols of the fractured nation.

Dr. Curtis Margo
Dr. Barry Verkauf
Dr. C.B. Slonim
Dr. Eric Pfeiffer
Dr. Barbara Hansen
Dr. Thomas Gest

The Historical Society exhibit was inspired by a recently published book with a similar title, Breakthrough: Elizabeth Hughes, the Discovery of Insulin, and the Making of a Medical Miracle, written by Thea Cooper and Arthur Ainsberg and published by St. Martin’s Press in 2010. Breakthrough is a work of historical fiction, with imagined dialogue, thoughts, feelings, and even perspiration mixed in with the historical facts.

After 24 years of library service in the Shimberg Health Sciences Library Circulation Dept., Kathy Manetta Goodman retired on May 31st, 2013. Kathy also worked as a staff member in the USF Main Campus Library for 5&1/2 years (with Jim Gray), and in the USF Media Library for 8 years. Prior to that, she also worked in the original USF Main Library for 4 years, from 1963 to 1967, as a student assistant. Kathy’s combined years of library service on the USF campus total nearly 42 years. She has seen USF grow from those first two classroom buildings, the Life Science building and the Chemistry building (where she had some of her English classes in the early years), to so many new buildings now that she doesn’t even know all of their names. The USF grounds were mainly sand in 1963, and there were very few sidewalks. Grass was planted later, along with more sidewalks. The original tall library building is now part of the Student Services complex.  If you wish to stay in touch with Kathy, her gmail address is: kgoodmanetta@gmail.com

Rose Bland, Interim Director of the Shimberg Health Sciences Library, recently graduated from a national selective leadership program sponsored by the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries and the U.S. National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health. Called the Leadership Fellows Program, Bland was one of only five librarians chosen nationally to participate in the year-long fellowship. The other four Fellows chosen for the Leadership Fellows Program represent the University of Rochester Medical Center, the University of Colorado Denver, Yale University, and the University of Florida. Graduating fellows were recognized at a ceremony and reception held earlier this month in Washington, DC.
The NLM/AAHSL Leadership Fellows Program prepares emerging leaders for academic health sciences library directorships. Fellows participate in a series of in-person leadership training sessions, attendance at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) annual meeting, a year-long fellow/mentor relationship, webinars and discussions on issues related to library leadership, and a two-week site visit to the mentor’s home library. Bland was nominated to the Leadership Fellows Program by John Curran, MD, professor of Pediatrics, associate vice president for Academic and Faculty Affairs at USF Health, and senior executive associate dean for Faculty and Academic Affairs for the Morsani College of Medicine.  (This post was written by Sarah Worth, USF Health Communications).

Shimberg Library staff, Lauren Adkins and Samantha Stewart created an exhibit calledMatters of the Heart for February. Chocolate and wine lovers rejoice! Current studies show that the consumption of these once thought to be unhealthy vices can actually provide multiple health benefits. The high content of polyphenols present in grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, tea, and cocoa has been reported to play an important role in reducing the risk of a variety of heart diseases. The exhibit also showcased the USF Hearth Health Institute which broke ground on December 17th, 2013. The future $50-million, five-story, 100,000 square foot facility will be built at the center of the university’s health campus. The USF Heart Health Institute will focus on advancing research of cardiovascular disease and initiating important clinical trials that will lead to new and improved treatment methods. Lauren and Samantha worked together to research this engaging and informative exhibit.  Samantha knitted a stunning anatomically correct heart as the centerpiece for the exhibit to the delight of the students.

Congratulations, Allison!

The first afghan went to Warm-Up America and the second and third to The Spring, a Tampa-based domestic violence shelter. Word is spreading and another librarian, Claudia Dold, from the USF Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Library is joining us for the next one! Pictured here is the last one that was completed!
